Pulis wields axe as coaching trio depart West Brom

Tony Pulis has begun to put his stamp on the coaching staff at West Brom with the departures of Rob Kelly, Keith Downing and Dean Kiely.

Pulis was unveiled as Albion head coach on Friday to replace the sacked Alan Irvine, and he has wasted no time in making changes at The Hawthorns.

Downing ends a three-year association with the club – that saw him take temporary charge prior to the appointment of Pepe Mel in 2013 – while Kiely s departure comes after eight years at the club.

The 44-year-old made 88 appearances as a player before becoming goalkeeping coach in March 2010, however he will not feature in Pulis plans.

Kelly s time at the club has been much shorter having arrived as Irvine s assistant in June, and he has followed the Scot out of the door …

Flick sure of German progression

Germany assistant coach Hansi Flick is confident his side will progress to the Euro 2012 knockout stages, despite their tough group.

The Euro 2008 finalists were drawn alongside Netherlands, Denmark and Portugal in the so-called Group of Death, and although the 47-year-old is aware of the threat posed to his side, he is confident of booking a quarter-final berth.

It s very important to win the first game of the tournament. We are sure that we will advance past the group stage. But you have to be there from the first moment, Flick said in a press conference.

We expect Portugal to be on eye-level (with Germany). Nani and (Cristiano) Ronaldo are always good for surprises.

Flick confirmed that Joachim Loew has a full squad to choose from for the Group B c…

Sessegnon set to stay put

Fulham have insisted that Ryan Sessegnon will not be sold this month, according to the Telegraph.

The teenage sensation has strongly been linked with a move to the Premier League with Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur both monitoring the situation but the Championship outfit are holding firm.

It is however expected that the seventeen year old will be sold in the summer, for a fee that is likely to eclipse the current record paid for a teenager by a British club, which currently stands at the £36m Manchester United paid for Anthony Martial in 2015.

Sessegnon broke into Fulham’s first team last season and has since racked up fifty-eight senior appearances in all competitions, scoring an impressive fourteen goals, considering his position which fluctuat…

England 2-1 Belgium: Mount´s deflected strike inflicts rare defeat on Red Devils

Mason Mount s deflected strike earned England a 2-1 Nations League victory over a Belgium side who suffered defeat for the first time in almost two years.

Belgium beat England twice at the 2018 World Cup and were ahead after 15 minutes at Wembley through Romelu Lukaku s penalty, awarded when the Inter forward was brought down by Eric Dier.

It was the first goal Gareth Southgate s side had conceded in a year but they drew level before the interval, Thomas Meunier conceding a soft spot-kick from which Marcus Rashford scored.

Having spent much of the first half on the back foot, England looked reinvigorated for the second period and got their reward when Mount s shot looped off Toby Alderweireld and beyond Simon Mignolet s reach, as the world s top-ranked …

Melbourne City 1-0 Perth Glory: Late Atkinson header wins it for champions

Nathaniel Atkinson s late strike gave Melbourne City a 1-0 victory over Perth Glory at AAMI Park on Wednesday.

Defending champions City, smarting from a first defeat of the A-League season at the hands of Western United, dominated the game but Glory goalkeeper Cameron Cook denied them time and again.

Atkinson finally broke the deadlock in the 88th minute, nodding home from close range after Connor Metcalfe timed his run to perfection and headed into the substitute s path.

Melbourne had 23 attempts and thought they had opened the scoring in the first half, but Andrew Nabbout s deflected strike was ruled out for offside.

While Melbourne will point to their domination of the game, Atkinson s winner was a cruel blow for Cook, who made six saves.

Loew rejects claims of squad unrest

Joachim Loew has claimed squad depth will be the key to future success for Germany even if some players are unhappy on the bench.

In the lead-up to Germany s 2014 FIFA World Cup qualifier away to Ireland, Bastian Schweinsteiger has stood by his claims of a lack of team-spirit in Loew s squad at Euro 2012, where he felt players on the bench did not provide 100 percent support to those on the field.

Loew has revealed he has spoken to Schweinsteiger about the midfielder s comments but does not agree there is a problem.

Of course it is difficult to sustain an excellent spirit over seven weeks and friction does arise which you don t get in Bundesliga clubs, but the atmosphere on the whole was good, Loew said

Maybe not as good as it was in 2010 (at the Worl…
