Torres feared for Euro 2012 place

Chelsea forward Fernando Torres has conceded he feared he would be left out of Spain s squad for Euro 2012.

The 28-year-old s chances of making the squad for Poland and Ukraine had been placed in doubt after he was omitted for the friendly match against Venezuela in February as a result of his poor form at Chelsea.

Torres inclusion in Spain s provisional Euro 2012 squad is a strong sign he will make the final 23-man cut, particularly with fellow forward David Villa out injured.

He said he was relieved to be part of coach Vicente del Bosque s plans again.

Asked if he feared missing out, Torres said: Yes, I saw myself out of the list. I never received a call with such enthusiasm.

Spain have won the right to be called favourites and we have to acce…

Bielsa to remain at Leeds United for 2019-20 campaign

Leeds United have confirmed that Marcelo Bielsa will remain as their manager for the 2019-20 Championship season.

The Argentinian was a surprise appointment prior to 2018-19 and came close to masterminding a long-awaited return to the Premier League.

After pushing for automatic promotion for much of the campaign, Leeds ended up in the play-offs and were dumped out by Derby County in the semi-finals.

The Elland Road club, though, have seen enough from Bielsa to suggest he can steer them towards promotion next season and activated their option to extend the 63-year-old s contract for another 12 months.

Rooney excited by England prospects in 2014

Wayne Rooney believes there are exciting times ahead for England after he played a key role in securing their place at the FIFA World Cup.

The Manchester United striker s seventh goal in six Group H games put his country on course for the victory over Poland on Tuesday night that ensured they will board the plane to Brazil next year.

Skipper Steven Gerrard put the icing on the cake with a second goal to seal a 2-0 win on a nervous night for Roy Hodgson s side at Wembley.

The three points ensured England finished top of the group and avoided the play-offs, with Ukraine consigned to second spot.

And Rooney believes England can head to South America with great optimism.

He told ITV Sport: We have always remained positive. We have had a great belief in ourselve…

Deschamps concedes Spain ´superior´ after France´s Euro 2024 exit

Didier Deschamps acknowledged Spain were superior as France suffered Euro 2024 elimination following their 2-1 semi-final defeat in Munich.

Les Bleus opened the scoring after just eight minutes through Randal Kolo Muani s header, though Lamine Yamal levelled with a long-range stunner, becoming the youngest scorer in major tournament history at the age of just 16 years and 362 days.

Dani Olmo seized on that momentum swing just four minutes later, dancing through the France defence before finishing past Mike Maignan as Jules Kounde was unable to clear on the line.

Spain held on to move into Sunday s final as France opened the scoring and lost for only the second time in a European Championship game, after a 3-2 defeat to the Netherlands in the 2000 group stages.

Sporting Gijon 1 Getafe 2: Sarabia seals first away win of 2015-16

Getafe secured their first away victory in La Liga this season by scoring twice in two second-half minutes to win 2-1 at Sporting Gijon on Monday.

The visitors only had two points from their first eight matches on the road in 2015-16, but came from behind to move up to 13th in the table and open up a five-point cushion over Sporting, who stay in the bottom three.

Sporting had taken a 16th-minute lead when on-loan Roma forward Antonio Sanabria netted his sixth league goal of the season with a simple finish from Miguel Angel Guerrero s cut-back.

It looked like Getafe s chances of a comeback were over when Pedro Leon struck the foot of the post with a second-half penalty after Stefan Scepovic had been barged in the back by Jorge Mere six yards from goal.

Spain coach Denia out to cap glittering 2024 with Olympic gold

Santi Denia views Friday s Olympic gold medal match versus France as an opportunity for Spain to underline their status as European football s finest.

La Roja have enjoyed a terrific 2024 to date, with the country s senior and under-19 sides both claiming European Championship titles last month.

Those successes came on the heels of Luis de la Fuente leading the senior team to UEFA Nations League success in 2023, and his men overcame heavyweights Croatia, Italy, Germany, France and England on their impressive run to Euro 2024 glory.

Olympic hosts France lie in wait in Friday s gold medal match at the Parc des Princes, where Denia is backing his team to bring more pride to their country.

We are delighted that we are a benchmark in Europe and the world, it…

COVID has complicated things, but with the league constantly moving the goalposts on its pandemic position, teams have a much greater sh…
